Membership FAQs

Which Membership Pathway is best for me?

Please review the overview here for self-assessment.  If you are still unsure, please email membership@aiqs.com.au with a detailed CV and we will be happy to assist.

What are the differences between a Skilled Migration Assessment and AIQS membership?

A Skilled Migration Assessment is a service performed by AIQS on behalf of the Australian Government and is not connected to AIQS membership in any way.

Membership is joining AIQS and you receive the benefits whereas a Skilled Migration Assessment doesn’t entitle you to become a member of AIQS.

I have already done a Skilled Migration Assessment, why do I need to do a Membership application as well to become a member?

Skilled migration assessments is a service performed on behalf of the Government by the AIQS.  Membership application is separate from Skilled Migration.  If you would like to become a member of the AIQS, please click here.

What is the difference between approved supervision and non-approved supervision?

Supervision means the application is under direct and continual supervision by a supervisor within the organisation.

An approved supervisor is defined as the following;

  • A Voting member (Associate, Member or Fellow) in good standing

OR

  • A Voting member of a recognised institute of quantity surveying who holds a membership equivalent of at least AIQS Member grade and experience level, and is in good standing

AND

  • There is no conflict of interest between the supervisor and the applicant.

I was granted Student Membership and I didn’t receive a membership certificate.

AIQS does not issue Student grade membership certificates.

I am based overseas, why do I not have access to the Member Advantage program?

Member Advantage is currently only providing benefits from businesses in Australia.  They do not have any offerings from international businesses and hence why we can only provide benefits for members who are Australian-based.

What’s the difference between Associate and Member grade?

Both grades are identical. Associate grade of membership used to be available prior to November 2012. If you are an Associate member, we encourage you to request a new member certificate so you can start using the Member grade postnominals (MAIQS).

What AIQS Academy topics do I need to complete to gain membership via Pathway 2?

Pathway 2 applicants are required to complete a pre-determined number of AIQS Academy topics aligning with the Band that their completed degree corresponds to. For example, an applicant who has completed a Construction Engineering degree equivalent to AQF Level 7 (or higher), would have to complete the AIQS Academy topics corresponding to Band 40.  The Bands are detailed in the Membership Entry and Elevation Policy - Section 8. Member Grade Pathway 2 Requirements.

Skilled Migration

Skilled Migration FAQs

Would the Qualifications Only Assessment be enough to apply for a visa under skilled migration?

The Qualifications Only assessment serves to recognise a candidate's degree.  The Department of Home Affairs may award points for a recognised degree; however, Skilled Migration must generally include relevant work experience.

I have a 'suitable' assessment under the previous 'Pathway 1' requirements, can I apply for a reassessment under the same requirements?

The previous Pathway 1 requirements is now equivalent to a 'Qualifications Only' Assessment.  You may be eligible to apply for a reassessement under this particular assessment type.

If you now hold a minimum of one year of relevant work experience, you will need to submit for a new application under the new Pathway 1 requirements.

I'm not sure which Visa I should apply for, can you please recommend the correct one?

We are unable to provide you advice regarding your visa application, please refer all your visa-related queries to the Department of Home Affairs.

What is a certified copy of a document?

Original documents are not accepted with your application for skilled migration assessment.  Documents submitted are not returned to the applicant.  Please provide certified copies of your documents.

When submitting your documents by email, please scan the certified copies and attach them as a PDF file to your email.

A certified copy of a document is a copy of an original document which is certified as a true copy by an authorised person.  Authorised people include:  Justices of the Peace (JP's), legal practitioners and Police Officers.

Documents must be certified as required by the Department of Home Affairs. Please see these standards as well as a full list of professionals who are authorised to certify documents on their website.

In instances where the applicant lives overseas, documents may be certified by a citizen of the applicant's country of residence who is employed in one of the occupational groups listed on the Department of Home Affairs website. Please note that the certification should appear on the front page of the document (not the reverse side of the document).

Certification should appear on each page of the submitted document.

Please ensure that your certified documents are dated no older than 12 months from the date of submission.

Which English Test(s) do you accept?

We accept any of the tests currently accepted by the Department of Home Affairs.

Which IELTS Test should I do?  General or Academic?

You may do either one.  Most people provide the General test. Please see section 9 of the Skilled Migration Assessment Policy for alternative tests as benchmarked against IELTS test scores.

I'm not sure which Pathway I should go through?

If you have graduated with an Australian degree found in our Accredited Program Guide and you have minimum one year of relevant experience post graduation, it will be Pathway 1.

If you have graduated from any other Australian degree not found in our Accredited Program Guide, it will be Pathway 2. You must also provide a minimum of 24 months post-graduate referenced skilled employment.

All other overseas degrees are Pathway 3.  You must also provide a minimum of 24 months post-graduate referenced skilled employment.

If you have been an AIQS member or a member of a recognised Association (conditions apply, please refer to section 11 of the Skilled Migration Policy) and have a minimum of 12 months of skilled employment history since achieving your membership -  regardless of which country you completed your degree, you may be eligible for Pathway 4.

For further information, please refer to our Skilled Migration Policy.

If you have graduated with an Australian degree found in our Accredited Program Guide and you do not yet have a minimum of one year of experience post-graduation, you may apply for a Qualifications Only assessment.

Do you have an example of a reference letter?

Reference letters must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be written by a Quantity Surveyor who has directly supervised your work
  • Must be on company letterhead (if the Supervisor writing your reference has moved to another organisation, they may use the letterhead of the company they now work for and state the name of the company where they worked with you)
  • Must be dated (include the date the letter was signed)
  • Must outline your role and the main duties performed in this role
  • Must include specified commencement and end dates of your role with the organisation
  • Must include contact details of the referrer
  • Must include the qualifications and postnominals of the person signing the reference letter (i.e. BSc QS if has a Bachelor of Science in Quantity Surveying and MRICS if a chartered member of RICS etc.)
  • Must include a colour copy of all referrer’s qualifications
  • Where multiple reference letters are provided, each letter should be uniquely written by your supervisor and must not contain in whole or part, copied sections or paragraphs from other reference letters.

An appropriate supervisor (not a professional or HR Manager) must meet one of the following criteria:

  • A direct supervisor that is practicing and qualified as a Quantity Surveyor who has studied and graduated from a minimum Bachelor’s degree equivalent to AQF level 7 or higher in quantity surveying;
  • A direct supervisor who is a practising Quantity Surveyor recognised as a financial Voting member of the AIQS or is a member equivalent to a financial Voting member of a body formally recognised by the Institute.

I have not yet graduated from my course.  Can I still apply for a skills assessment?

No, you must have graduated from the applicable qualification.

Do you provide skills assessments for work experience only?

There are no skills assessments for work experience only.  For each pathway, the qualification must first be assessed as suitable in order for any work experience to be assessed as suitable.

If I work as a Quantity Surveyor but hold a degree in an allied discipline (such as Civil Engineering), is my degree eligible for a skills assessment?

The qualification requirement in our Skilled Migration Assessment Policy states that applicants must have a degree in "Quantity Surveying or Construction Management and Economics".  The interpretation of "Quantity Surveying" is defined in Section 2 of our Skilled Migration Assessment Policy. “Allied Professions” are defined in Section 11.  Therefore, applicants with degrees in allied disciplines may be considered for a skills assessment but it is not a guarantee.

Any other engineering degrees such as general engineering, mechanical, electrical or software are not considered as allied disciplines.

My positive assessment letter is about to expire, can I renew the assessment?

You may apply for a reassessment within 24 months of the letter date. Please resubmit all documents with up to date information as per the Pathway you originally submitted (with the exception of Pathway 1, which is now a 'Qualifications Only" assessment); a new application form duly filled out; as well as the current outcome letter. The reassessment fee is applicable to complete applications received within the validity period; if checklist items are incomplete or missing and provided after the validity period, the full assessment fee applies.

Quantity Surveying is flagged on the MLTSSL.  Do you know whether it will stay on the list over the next 6-12 months?

Whilst the relevant Government department involves us in the consultation phase, we find out at the same time as the public whether Quantity Surveying remains on the list.  Unfortunately, we cannot foresee what will happen with the list in 6-12 months' time.

I have received a 'suitable' assessment through Pathway 1 OR I am eligible to apply through Pathway 1, but I would also like to have my work experience assessed.

We do not assess work experience separately. If you have already had your degree assessed, you will need to submit a new application under Pathway 1 (degree plus one year of work experience post-graduation).

I hold a masters degree in quantity surveying, but my bachelor's degree is not in quantity surveying.  Does my work experience prior to obtaining the masters degree count?

Only work experience post obtaining a recognised degree may potentially be recognised.  If your first degree is not recognised then only the years of work experience after achieving your masters degree may potentially be recognised.

Am I required to submit an English Test Report with my application?

Overseas trained applicants must submit a Department of Home Affairs approved English Language Test with their application.  Exceptions are listed in the Skilled Migration Policy (Section 9).
We do NOT accept combined test results from tests undertaken at different times.

I am a current member of AIQS / recognised Association.  Do I still need to submit for a skills assessment or is there a direct pathway?

If you are a current member of AIQS or a recognised Association, this is helpful with the overall assessment of your application. You may also be eligible to apply through Pathway 4 if you have a minimum of 12 months of work experience post obtaining your membership qualification.  However, you will still need to fill out an application form for skilled migration and provide all the supporting documents as requested. Skilled Migration is assessed separately from membership.

Please print your test report and have this certified by an authorised person. You may then scan this and attach it as part of your submission. Please do not send original test reports to us.

If you have successfully completed an AIQS accredited degree, you are eligible to transfer your membership from Student to Graduate grade. To transfer your membership to Graduate grade, please complete the Graduate application form.

The AIQS Accredited Program Guide contains accredited degrees from overseas.  Do these degrees also count under Pathway 1?

The Policy clearly states that only the Australian degrees listed under the Accredited Program Guide are eligible for Pathway 1.  If you have graduated from an overseas degree, regardless of whether it is listed in the Accredited Course Guide, you must apply through Pathway 3 or 4.

How many points am I eligible for given my background?

Please refer all your points and visa-related enquiries to either a migration agent or to the Department of Home Affairs.

How long is my assessment valid for?

2 years from the date on your assessment letter. Any subsequent assessment letters will make the assessment letter null and void, and the validity period will reset from the date of the latest assessment letter.
