The global construction industry is currently very inefficient in assessing the capital costs and carbon footprint of proposed projects during the pre-construction phase. This fact leads to inefficient cost and carbon data capture and assessment for the whole life cycle of projects and capital assets.

Assessing multiple alternative designs and construction methods to optimise cost and embodied carbon footprint of projects is currently a manual, time-consuming process that project stakeholders cannot afford due to time constraints. There is a general trend to use technology to automate this process by developing a standardised data structure within the 3D design models, such as Uniclass classification, which can enable automated quantity take-offs through its mapping with regional standard methods of measurement for cost planning.

In this session, we propose the implementation of a new automation tool that enables construction projects to leverage the full benefits of building information modeling in combination with artificial intelligence techniques for Cost and Carbon estimates.  This approach leads to shorter pre-construction phases, reduced project management costs, faster turnaround times for optioneering and value engineering, providing Owners greater visibility of carbon emissions and overall improved cost & carbon control of their Assets.
