Steel and Timber, as construction materials are used throughout a variety of projects, each offering different considerations in their characteristics for applications when installed in floor and roof structures.  Both materials can impact cost and time through various circumstances.

Trudi Carter and Michael Greville from AECOM will examine how steel and timber are both used in roof and floor structures referencing case studies at 80 Collins Street and Wellington Street in Melbourne CBD. Nathan Benbow and Daniel Wright from Australian Sustainable Hardwoods (ASH) will provide insight into fabrication, supply and program considerations that can affect construction time and cost.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Trudi Carter
Principal Structural Engineer for AECOM

Trudi is a Principal Structural Engineer based in Melbourne with strong inter-personal skills, quick understanding and an excellent work ethic.
Trudi has primarily worked on sport, education, laboratory and government sector buildings.  Her work on tertiary education and commercial government buildings has included a number of projects which were located on spatially constrained sites within operational environments, where particular consideration of safe and low impact construction was required.  This has resulted in the consideration of, or incorporation of timber frame structural systems.
Most recently, Trudi has worked on the Ballarat Gov Hub, where a mass timber structure was constructed.  Following her work on this project, Trudi has a solid understanding of the use of engineered timber on medium to large scale projects within the Australian context, and the challenges and opportunities associated with this form of construction.

Michael Greville
Principal Structural Engineer for AECOM

Michael has over 15 years’ experience in structural engineering having worked on a wide variety of projects in Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne for the buildings and places, transport infrastructure and mining business lines.
Michael is knowledgeable in the design of various structural materials including steel, reinforced concrete and composite structures.  He is proficient in the use of structural design packages including RAPT, SpaceGass, Ideastatica, Limcon and Strand 7.

Nathan Benbow
Engineering Design Manager – Australian Sustainable Hardwoods Pty Ltd (ASH)

Nathan, Young Engineer of the Year – Victoria Winner for 2021 is a highly skilled structural engineer who genuinely believes there is a better way to build. He is passionate about mass timber design and construction and is doing what he can to make positive change in the local construction industry.
Nathan has delivered many note-worthy projects during his career at Vistek, including the Royd Clan’s House in Ceres and Adina Hotel’s 55 Southbank Boulevard.

Daniel Wright
Director | National Business Development Manager
Australian Sustainable Hardwoods Pty Ltd (ASH)

Daniel has extensive knowledge and experience of various timber species, applications, performances and markets. Drawing on decades of experience in global timber markets as well as national timber manufacturing markets, Daniel is responsible for the research, strategy, marketing and development of new initiatives at ASH to improve value for the supply chain while maximising yield and use of a sustainable and renewable resource.
Developments include:
MASSLAM – Australia’s only mass timber GLT systems and production facility.
Australian Oak – Australia’s only pre-finished engineered flooring manufacturing plant.
Iron Ash – enhanced modification of non-durable species for decay resistance in full weather environments.
Pyrolysis – turning timber manufactured by-products into hydrogen for use in soon to be emerging markets.
