Assessment of Professional Competence (APC)

Home Become a Member Assessment of Professional Competence (APC)

An Assessment of Professional Competence Interview (APC) is a crucial step in becoming an AIQS member. The APC is your opportunity to demonstrate your experience, knowledge, and skills and have them verified to become a Certified Quantity Surveyor.

About the APC

APC Interviews are conducted either in person or by a Microsoft Teams video call and consist of a panel of three Assessors and one candidate. The Assessors will ask a series of scenario-based questions directly relating to the competencies that the candidate has selected on their membership application form, and information provided in their Professional Experience Diary. They will also ask principle-based questions relating to the AIQS Code of Conduct.

Each interview lasts approximately 60 minutes. Assessors will take notes throughout the interview. Candidates are not permitted to refer to any materials, devices, notes, aid sheets, cheat sheets, references, or persons during the interview; a breach of this rule may result in penalties. Mobile phones and all other electronic equipment must be switched off during the APC interview, unless required to be on the online platform in use.

How to Prepare for Your APC

APC candidates must read and understand the competency requirements, including the relevant Competency Standards document and the AIQS Code of Conduct.

Checklist

After the APC Interview

Candidates will be provided with an official APC Report following their interview (up to ten business days). The Report will:

  • advise if the candidate has passed or been referred
  • outline reasons for the decision and areas that require improvement, if applicable.

All communication regarding the APC interview and outcome must be via AIQS Head Office.

Appeals

An applicant who is unsuccessful in their APC interview has a right of appeal within 30 days after receiving their APC Report to exercise this right. The appeal must be made in writing to the AIQS Membership Team (membership@aiqs.com.au) and clearly state the grounds on which the appeal is being lodged.

More details about the appeals process can be found in the Membership Entry and Elevation Policy.
